Everyone knows him...but he deserves a thread
I rode at one barn for 3 or so years until they moved a couple hours away. My mom decided that 2-3 hours was way too far to drive every week for me to go riding, so I had to look for a new barn. And as you probably guessed, it was Brat's barn.
So anyway, before Brat belonged to my trainer, he belonged to some friends of hers. He was thrown out in the pasture so they let my trainer have him for as long as she wanted him.... and he's still here ;D
I started riding at this barn 4-5 years ago at a summer camp. I was under the impression that Brat was retired (because he was at the time), but he was used in ground activities and grooming. I decided after the camp that I liked the barn so I started taking lessons. When my trainer had Brat in the crossties I was confused. Turns out that the reason he was retired was because he gave shit to the beginners. He would buck with them and really test them. She thought I could handle him so he was brought out of retirement. It took a little (or a lot...) of work, but I finally brought him to a point where he listened about 90-95% of the time. He still would get cranky, he still would try to test me, but usually those days were when his arthritis was bothering him. He has these fun habits like butting people with his head, etc, but he lets me hug all over him without him butting me...so I guess he loves me
I showed him for a year and a half or two years, and he got 2nd through 6th place ribbons. Who knew? Granted, most of the ribbons he and I won were 3rd and 4th place out of 4-8, but that was ok with me. While Brat is absolutely adorable, he's not the flashiest horse and he isn't the best candidate for a show horse. He did his best for me, though. (And for the record, now that I"m showing on Genius, Duck, and Dustin, I place better... or I'll place the same but there will be a lot more people in the class)
We retired Brat again about a year ago. Every now and then a couple girls ride him, but they hardly weigh a thing. One is a good rider for her experience and is good about making him listen, so I think occasional use is good for him.
Anyway, Brat and I have a close bond, and I love the little booger so much. If this thread wasn't so long, I'd post pics...and I might later...but for now, if you wanna see him look in the picture secton.
Btw... forgot the important stuff.
